BARCO offers a broad range of large screen CRT projectors for home cinema installations

Large screen video projection has become trendsetting entertainment. Video productions now have all the glamour, power and attraction of film and satellite broadcasts gain tremendous impact when projected on a screen ‘larger than life’. BARCO Projection Systems has been a world leading developer and manufacturer of high quality large screen projection systems for almost 20 years now. Recently, as a result of the importance of this ever-growing market, BARCO took the decision to establish a Home Theater Product Group within its BARCO Projection Products Business Unit. This establishment is part of a general trend within the company to be more focused on specific applications and markets, to provide systems and solutions, not just products. This new Product Group is headed by one of BARCO’s most experienced marketing experts, Tom Vanthuyne. Together with a team of marketing people and engineers, he will develop solutions, specifically designed for home theater integration. The worldwide sales network, the partnership with leading companies in the market and the development of market-dedicated products are just some of the aspects, which result in a better market penetration. Last but not least, however, BARCO’s long experience in large screen projection results in an endless know-how with regard to advice for sale and installation, picture tuning and overall alignment as well as service. This allows BARCO to offer the perfect solution for every specific home theater application.

BARCO’s product range for Home Theater applications includes various CRT-based projection systems: the BarcoVision 508, the BarcoVision 708 MM and the BarcoVision 1609s.
The BarcoVision 508 is an ultra compact, lightweight yet high performance and easy to use video-only projector. Using special liquid coupled lenses and the ‘no-fan’ design to keep the dust on the outside and the noise to a minimum, this unit is ideally suited for dusty and/or smoky as well as low noise environments. It is the preferred choice for home theater installations in most parts of Asia, especially in Taiwan.

Based on the proven concept of the multiple award-winning 700 Series video projectors, the BarcoVision 708 MM has been selected by many customers worldwide to be the ideal solution for displaying high quality images with excellent peak white and black levels in most home theater applications.

For the professional, BARCO can offer the BarcoVision 1609s. Equipped with 9” electromagnetic focus CRTs and super-high brightness lenses, this high-performance projector displays true color images with an extremely high light output. Features such as brightness for video applications, broad source compatibility, flexibility and ease-of-use make it the best buy for every professional home theater application.

All BARCO CRT projectors – except for the BarcoVision 508 - can be equipped with BARCO’s IRIS³ automatic alignment system, resulting in an easy setup and control for every-day users. In fact, the CRT projector now handles itself!

As true color, extremely sharp images are of utmost importance for home theater applications, both the BarcoVision 708 MM and the BarcoVision 1609s can be delivered with built-in Line Doubler LiDo or Line Multipler LiMo for smoother, more ‘film-like’ images with clearer outlines.


BARCO, however, further continues its quest into higher performance and advanced architecture and design in CRT projection. At Infocomm Asia in Singapore beginning of September, BARCO will unveil a completely new range of high-end CRT projection systems, specifically designed for the home theater integration: The BARCO CINE range, including BARCO Cine 6, BARCO Cine 7 and BARCO Cine 8. This Cine range features high brightness 7” and 8” CRTs and high definition lenses for images with extremely high peak white and excellent black levels. The internal or external line doubling or line quadrupling feature results in flicker free picture reproduction (line doubling standard on Cine 6; line doubling or line quadrupling optional for Cine 7 and 8). Further, the projectors display all video and HDTV sources as well as almost any computer source and can easily been switched between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio or any other screen format. In order to improve the user-friendliness of the systems, BARCO has also included its IRIS3 automatic alignment system, allowing easy alignment of geometry and convergence in just a few minutes.



With the BARCO CINE range you can finally experience how exciting large screen video projection can be. Imagine images so true-to-life that they appear as bright and crisp as normal film, with unparalleled clarity, deep, rich contrast and exceptional color fidelity. These innovative features combined with the stylish design make the BARCO CINE the choice of leading interior designers. Thanks to the design, these projectors can equally be hidden in the ceiling or built into a coffee table. The exceptional brightness of the equipment means there is no requirement for bulky curved high gain screen; the standard flat fixed or retractable screens work quite well. The units can even be hidden in a limited area behind the screen. Using a mirror system, the units display extremely high brightness images.

The BARCO CINE offers you a future-proof system, which meets the needs of even the most demanding home theater enthusiast. Not only are these projectors designed to accommodate all worldwide video standards (PAL, SECAM, NTSC) as well as S-VHS, they also display all currently proposed HDTV, extended or improved TV standards - Eureka 95 (1250/50), Hi-Vision (1125/60), ACTV, IDTV (line doubled video), in either 4:3 or the new 16:9 aspect ratio format.
This means, each projector of the CINE range has an unlimited compatibility with sources such as DVD, HDTV, laser discs, analog and digital video tape recorders, videogame consoles, camera, and demodulated satellite and antenna signals as well as computers. In short: the BARCO CINE CRT-projectors make it possible to experience cinema excitement, but they also let you enjoy breathtaking game action, web surfing, interactive video entertainment or even revive your precious family moments.

Furthermore, the BARCO CINE range can be connected to a new range of switchers – VSE – which allows easy switching between various Audio/Video inputs and, which enhances the image quality of the video signals. At your command, the projector is simultaneously switching the picture and the sound. The SteadySyncTM built-in multi-standard video decoder of the VSE Series allows for automatic detection and enhancement of DVD or VCR signals.

Now, you must think: “These new projectors can only be used by the fanatic user or the real technician.” However, this is certainly not the case. Convenient, well organized on-screen menus and a backlit infrared remote control simplify all adjustments of the projector, even for first-time users. With a simple touch on the remote control, the user can supervise all settings: brightness, contrast, color, tint, sharpness as well as the convergence and geometry (Using the IRIS3 automatic alignment system. Further, the user can easily switch between different screen formats. All settings can be stored. This allows the projector to automatically select the settings for each source in use, providing consistently perfect image quality.




BARCO’s CRT-based projectors have been installed in many home cinema applications all over the world.

One of the European reference applications is the customer center of Linn Products Ltd., Britain’s premier audio and home entertainment specialist. It was vital that their home cinema demonstration theater showed the ultimate possible quality. Having reviewed every projector on the market, Linn selected the BARCO 700 Series CRT projector for their flagship showroom.

BARCO further has a lot of other home theater installations in Europe: in Belgium, France, UK, Italy, Spain, etc.

In Italy, for instance, BARCO has recently reached an agreement with one of the main home theater magazine to equip their showroom with a BARCO CRT projector. This installation allows dealers and end-users in the home theater market to experience the extreme solution for home cinema and home entertainment, including the most advanced technologies in sound, vision and control – another reference application.

In Spain and UK, however, the above-mentioned CRT projectors did not meet the requirements of the customer, as he decided to install the BarcoReality 812, based on 12” CRTs. This “new reality” in CRT projection displays all worldwide Video, S-VHS and Component Video signals as well as HDTV-signals in 4:3 and 16:9 format and is compatible with all computer sources and electronic workstations up to the highest resolution. In addition, the projector produces images with a light output of 500 ANSI lumens – more than double the light output of conventional high-output CRT projectors.

In the USA, BARCO projectors have been selected the perfect tools for many high-performance home theater installations. BARCO has signed an OEM-agreement with RUNCO Int. (USA), which initially included 7” CRT projectors, but has now been expanded with a second type of projectors, based on 9” tubes. Further, an OEM contract was also signed with Faroudja Laboratories (Silicon Valley, California, US).

The most growing market for high-end home and video entertainment, however, has been Asia. Many citizens equip their houses or countryhouses with high tech audio-visual installations, including large screen video projection systems.

A customer in Hong Kong has equipped 2 of his apartments with large screen 700 and 1200 Series projection systems. This customer chose BARCO, because he is convinced the company can offer him the right solution and the best support as world leader in video projection.

Moreover, since the creation of the BARCO organization in Taiwan last year, more than two hundred (200) BarcoVision 508 projectors have been delivered for home theater installations. Other Asian reference applications can be found in Singapore, Japan …

In addition, BARCO’s CRT projectors have worldwide been granted several awards: In America, the BarcoVision 708 and BarcoGraphics 1209s were granted “1999 AV Video Platinum Awards” as the most innovative products in the marketplace. In Japan, BARCO CRT products have won several awards as Best Favorite and Best Buy in HiVi, Audio Review and Sound Pal magazine. In Italy, major home theater magazines have tested the BarcoVision 708 MM to declare it the Very Best in Home Theater projection. Finally, BARCO’s CRT projectors were declared best products in many other leading magazines in France, Taiwan, etc.

This shows BARCO CRT projectors are reference products for home theater integration!
